DIY : How to make an Anti Aging Face cream

I am really happy with how our new batch of face cream came out and the texture and thought it was about time to share how to make an anti aging face cream. It is a little harder than making cleaning products, but if I, my my two left hands can make it I am confident anyone can. So why should you make yours and how to make it, let’s dig in!

Why Making Your Own Face Cream?

Unfortunately, there are a LOT of companies that offer products full of harmful chemicals. According the EWG, Women use on average 12 personal care products every day, exposing themselves to 168 chemicals. Men use half as many products but still come in contact with 85 chemicals daily. Disgusted yet? Hold on it gets better.

Most shampoo, lotions and creams we consume contain a class of chemicals called endocrine disruptors, which interfere with the functions of the hormonal system and may contribute to reproductive problems such as infertility (in both women and men), among other issues. For more you can read the article on prevention. Basically, the way we take care of our body is slowly deregulating our body. Scientists advise consumers to reduce their consumption of beauty products and look up the ingredients every time before a purchase.

Personally, I prefer to spend my time looking how to make my products myself than waste it in a shop looking up labels. Knowledge is power kinda thing. Plus, products change all the times in stores, my recipe won’t.

Finally, did you know that our skin absorb about 40% of what we put on it? I heard a great advice once: “you should only put on your skin something you would be willing to eat.” I really liked it as it triggered something inside. Back, I definitely would never have had even put my lotion close to my lips… Knowing what companies put in their products definitely vaccinated me from using them further more. This being said, there are great small new companies starting  to pop up to offer alternatives.

If are not a DIY person I suggest you take a look here to see if you products are bad or good for you. And Here is a company based in Portland that I came across recently at a fair and thought I should share. However, if you don’t have the money to spend or if you don’t have access to responsible brands, making it yourself might be the best option!

How To Make A Face Cream

how to make anti aging face cream - a greener life
  1. 1/4 cup of almond oil

  2. 2 tbsp of coconut oil

  3. 1 tbsp of shea butter or cacao butter ( if you don’t have any, an extra 1/2 tbsp of coconut oil will do the job)

  4. 2 tbsp of bees wax (you can use Candelilla wax among other wax if you prefer a vegan option)

  5. 1/2 tsp of vitamin E

  6. 2 1/2 tbsp of aloe vera

  7. 1/2 tbsp of vegetal glycerin.

  8. About 5 drops of rose and yang-ylang essential oils. ( you can also use Frankincense, Sandalwood, Clary sage or Jasmine)

Direction

To make the cream you’ll have to go through a two-step process. First, you’ll want to do a Bain-marie also known as double boiler. Bring your water to simmer then, add a heat resistant bowl (I use a stainless steel one or small pot works great) and poor your oils and the bees wax in it. Let it sit until all the ingredients have melted.

Turn off the water and take your pot out of the water. Now you will add your vitamin E, aloe vera, glycerin and essential oils to the mixture. You’ll notice as you poor the cold ingredients in it a reaction, it is normal, the hard oils are reacting to the change of temperature. (If you decided not to add the aloe and glycerin and only added more oils, your job is done. Poor the mixture in the jar you’ll be using and let it cool down before using.)

Use it after wash morning and/or evenings according to your beauty care routine.

Important Info

The most important when selecting you oils is to have a balanced mix of liquid and hard oils. Here we chose almond and mostly coconut, but feel free to change things up! Olive and avocado oils are really great for skin. And you can use more shea butter than coconut if you prefer the texture.

Note that there are as many ways to go as your imagination (and you skin needs) will lead you to. If you have a dry skin make sure to add aloe vera and glycerin as your skin will favor water based products for hydration. However, if you have a more oily skin, as counter intuitive as it may sound, you want to go for oil based and don’t ultimately need too much watery ingredients. Finally, if like me you have a mixed skin, I recommend you use a different product for the two areas of your face. of use more of your cream in the areas that need it.

This cream is not your average product! It can easily be sold for $40 or $50 dollars in store because its high end ingredients it contains, enjoy luxury! 😉 Of course if you need to buy all the products, you may potentially need to spend a little more than if you were buying a packaged one, but on the long term you will save a lot of money (and here you don’t generate trash).

Last but not least, don’t use too much! That was one of my first mistake when I made this cream for the first time. Take very little of it and see how your skin absorbs it before putting more.

That’s most of what you need to know to make your own beauty cream. I hope you will find it useful and leave a comment if you have tried it, I am curious to hear your feedbacks!
